Bowness-on-Windermere is the full name of this town located towards the south east side of Lake Windermere in the Lake District. It is a sprawling tourist town resulting from the completion of the railway line from Oxenholme and Kendal to Windermere in 1847. Bowness is arguably Cumbria's most popular destination, with the town busy most of the year. A car ferry still crosses the lake between Ferry Nab and Ferry House whioch provides tourists with a convenient crossing to the west side of Lake Windermere.
