Edinburgh Castle is the wonderful centrepiece of the city, standing proud upon the basalt core of an extinct volcano. It dates back to the 12th century and has had modifications over 800 years. Originall it was a fortress, later it beacme a royal palace, a military garrison and then a prison ! The main attractions besides the beauty of the castle are the Great Hall, the Argyle Battery, the Royl Palace, the Governor's House and St Margaret's Chapel.
Princes Street is the most famous and main thoroughfare in Edinburgh and a geart shopping experience as well as home to the Hogmanay festivities where they have a street party on 31st December (ticket only). Worth visiting are the National Gallery of Scotland, the National Museum of Scotland and the Scottish National Portrait Gallery.
